The House

Nicholas Ferraro

Every piece in the collection is designed, carved and cast by Nicholas Ferraro himself. One bench, one pair of hands, one piece at a time.

Nicholas began making jewelry in [year started], in [city], with [a hand-me-down set of carving tools and a single block of wax]. [The first pieces were rings for himself and the people around him.] The work has grown since then; the method has not.

Each design starts as a carving. From the carving a mold is taken, and the piece is cast in metal, then cleaned, set, darkened or polished by hand. There is no production line and no stock on a shelf. A ring is begun when it is ordered, and it is sized to the hand that will wear it.

The pieces are dark, textured and a little strange on purpose: skulls, spikes, stitches, hidden chambers, stones set where you do not expect them. They are made to be worn every day and to wear in rather than out. The marks of the hand stay in the metal.

I

Design

Every piece is drawn, then carved by hand [in wax]. The carving is the original; every casting carries its marks.

II

Cast

The carving is cast in [sterling silver] in the studio in [city], then cleaned and inspected before any finishing begins.

III

Finish

Stones are set, recesses are darkened, high points are polished. Then the piece is sized to you before it leaves the bench.
